Manchester United Fan Club
Manchester United Football Club is an English football club based at Old Trafford in Greater Manchester. The club is also referred to among supporters as Man United or simply United. The more frequently heard Man U., while sometimes used by supporters and the press, is more often heard from fans of rival clubs, and is often met with annoyance by the club's core fan base. The club was formed as Newton Heath LYR F.C. in 1878, as the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath, becoming Manchester United on 26 April 1902. Another suggested name was Manchester Celtic, but it was not chosen. Traditionally one of the larger and most-supported clubs in England, United under manager Sir Alex Ferguson achieved a degree of dominance in domestic competitions in the 1990s unseen since the great Liverpool F.C. sides of the mid 1970s and early 1980s. This culminated in 1999, with the club winning an unprecedented treble of the English Premier League, FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League. 1999 - Manchester United bring the European Cup home 1998-99 will be forever remembered for Manchester United's treble success which was completed with dramatic 2-1 win over Bayern Munich in injury time. Many people will remember this final for its last three minutes of stoppage time. After a Mario Basler goal had appeared to have won the game for the Germans. But the referee allowed three minutes of stoppage time. Manchester United put all men forward including their goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. Schmeichel was playing his last ever game for Manchester United as Captain after Roy Keane was missing through suspension. David Beckham took the corner but it was cleared to Ryan Giggs, who took a shot. The ball reached Teddy Sheringham who equalised to the despair of the Bayern players. It looked to have forced extra time. Then, just as all participants were preparing for extra time, United got forward in the 93rd minute and forced another corner. Beckham swung it towards Sheringham who headed it on to Ole Gunnar SolskjAr who only needed to stick his foot out. He had scored United's winner and made history. Man United became the first club to win the Premiership/FA Cup/European Cup treble and were champions of Europe for the first time since 1968. It was the first time that an English club had won the European Cup since Liverpool won it in 1984. Manchester United, Celtic, PSV Eindhoven and Ajax Amsterdam are the only teams to complete a "treble"awin their domestic league championship, their domestic cup, and the Champions League/European Cup. Man United did so during the 1998/99 season. Celtic managed this in 1966/67, also winning the Scottish League Cup and Glasgow Cup that year. In 1972 Ajax won the European Cup, their domestic league and cup. The following season they also won the European Super Cup and the European/South American Cup. PSV did this in 1987/88, while Liverpool won the European Cup, the league title and the League Cup in 1980/81.
